The second step is converting the coca paste into cocaine base. This is done in “base labs” located deep in the jungle and requires more complicated equipment. Some chemicals involved include sulfuric acid, hydrochloric acid, and ammonia. The resulting mixture is dried with heat lamps and becomes cocaine base.

The third and final step is converting the base to cocaine hydrochloride. This process requires a bigger facility; more equipment; and more dangerous, flammable chemicals, including acetone. The result is the cocaine powder that is sold on the street.
